The idea for Story in a Box, an interactive story-telling experience, is both developmentally appropriate and stimulating for young children. Being able to retell a familiar story is a key predictor for later success in acquiring reading skills. Using old favorites, such as The Three Little Pigs, allows children to become an integral part of the story. They can follow along with the book and act out the story, or they can tell it their own way, making choices as they play with the cut-out characters. The books come alive, and take on a new plot as children are provided the opportunity to creatively develop their ideas. The potential for children to create their own stories utilizing the cut-out characters are endless.
These stories allow children to take risks, to make up their own beginnings and endings to folktales, offering them the control over their world, which is a powerful self-esteem builder and motivator to engage in the reading process. Early reading experiences are most meaningful when children are actively engaged in the process of reading and talking about books, in settings that are comfortable and non-threatening.
I can see Story in a Box as a great tool in the classroom as teachers work with small groups of children to retell these stories, too.

BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARD
TO
JACK AND THE BEANSTALK STORY IN A BOXT
with JACK'S BAG OF BEANS
The Straight Edge Press, the publishing division of The Straight Edge, Inc., received the "Book of the Year" Award from "Creative Child Magazine" for its Jack and the Beanstalk Story in a BoxT Book with Jack's Bag of Beans.
Imagine how much fun it would be to be able to grow your own beanstalk right after you have read the story of "Jack and the Beanstalk". The "Jack and the Beanstalk Story in a Box" is a very unique presentation of the story as well. The book comes with a drawer filled with stand-up story characters and props. So a parent and child can read the story and a child can re-enact the story using the thick, cardboard, stand-up characters. The attached net bag holds a packet of easy-to-grow pole beans, a plastic planting pot and a small bag of potting soil. Plant the beans on a window sill, keep moist and within a week or two, there will a beanstalk! Life and art combine for a truly unique reading and growing experience. Recommended for children over 3 years. Story in a Box books have also received Teachers' Choice, Teachers' Choice for the Family and Creative Child Awards.
