Here are a few activities to help you teach your children addition and subtraction:
Addition and Subtraction: Hands on Learning with Cheerios.
Our favorite way to learn our math facts is by using Cheerios. We use the Cheerios and place one Cheerio on one side of the plate and two on the other side. "What is one plus two more Cheerios?" You can them add the two groups of Cheerios.
It is a lot more fun to practice subtraction with the Cheerios. Place ten Cheerios in a bowl. Now subtract five Cheerios. "How many Cheerios do you have left?" This is also a great way to help your encourage children to eat their breakfast.
Addition and Subtraction: Math Game
Have your child close their eyes and point to a math problem. Cover up the answer to the addition or subtraction problem. Have your children tell you the answer.
Addition and Subtraction: Make a Math Necklace
Make an addition and subtraction necklace or bracelet. Your children will practice adding when you aren't even looking. You will need string and fruit loops.
We used green, yellow, orange and red fruit loops. Place about 20 fruit loops on a piece of string. Group each of the colored fruit loops next to each other.
Next, count the green fruit loops and the yellow fruit loops. Have the children add the two numbers together. They add the other two colored fruit loops together.
You may want to let your children have a break and eat a few fruit loops. Now try our addition and subtraction activity again.
